Dark chocolate relieves stress and inflammation as well as boosts memory, so you must add it to your daily diet. According to results of experimental trials, consuming dark chocolate can give you bigger health benefits such as reducing stress levels, improving memory, mood, and immunity.
It is the first study to show the effect of cacao — a major source of flavonoids which is commonly known to benefit cognitive, endocrine and cardiovascular health. The flavonoids are naturally-occurring compounds found in cacao and potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents.
During the study, the participants were asked to consume 48 grams of dark chocolate. After thirty minutes, they were given an EEG (brain scan).
The results found that dark chocolates manage neural signaling, cellular immune response, and sensory perception as well as positively affects human gene expression. The researchers also found the potential link of dark chocolates with increased brain plasticity.
Lead author of the study, Lee Berk, said that further investigation is required for the study findings, particularly to discover the importance of these impacts on the brain and immune cells in larger study populations.
“This is the first time that we have looked at the impact of large amounts of cacao in doses as small as a regular-sized chocolate bar in humans over short or long periods of time, and are encouraged by the findings,” Berk noted.
“These studies show us that higher the concentration of cacao, the more positive the impact on cognition, memory, mood, immunity and other beneficial effects,” Berk added.
